Frequency synchronization for multiuser MIMO-OFDM system using Bayesian approach

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the problem of frequency synchronization in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. Different from existing work, a Bayesian approach is used in the parameter estimation problem. In this paper, the Bayes estimator for carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation is proposed and the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (BCRB) is also derived in closed form. Direct implementation of the resultant estimation scheme with conventional methods is challenging since a high degree of mathematical sophistication is always required. To solve this problem, the Gibbs sampler is exploited with an efficient sample generation method. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimation scheme. ©2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2010 IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference (GLOBECOM 2010), Miami, FL., 6-10 December 2010. Reclaim the public space movement in Hong Kong: the struggle to liberate Victoria Harbor and Times Square

Conference Theme: Landscapes of Global Urbanism: Power, Marginality, and CreativityWhen the Hong Kong government tore down the Star Ferry Pier at the Victoria Harbor in a hurry on 13 December 2006, they did not realize that their “routine” bulldozing style of development has ignited a new social movement, which, for lack of a better name, is now often understood as a reclaiming the public space movement. On that night, 14 protestors who occupied the construction site in order to stop the demolition were forcefully dragged out of the site into the police station. More than 200 supporters rallied outside the construction site, with new comers rushing to show their support. Some of them came due to sms messages. Some came after seeing the live footage of the police round-up on the independent media online. A spontaneous crowd who barely knows each other witnessed not only the government’s violence against the historical building and the people. Some of them have never participated in a police confrontation before. These new Star Ferry warriors, together with the anti-urban renewal groups and concerned artists formed a new alliance – Local Action. From April to August 2006, Local Action activists occupied the soon-to-be demolished Queen’s Pier –adjacent to the Star Ferry Pier – for 3 months demanding that this public space be kept in the heart of the financial district as a way to prevent further commodification and militarization of the Victoria Harbor. Since then, the reclaim the public space movement has spread all over Hong Kong, and forced the government to sue the Times Square owner for illegally subletting the Times Square (a privately owned public space) to Starbucks for profit. What brought these new agents together in the first place? Are they awakened to anger and defiance by the brutal demolition of the Star Ferry & Queen’s Pier? Or are they, as the government, mainstream politicians and media claim, in search of a “collective memory” at the death of the Star Ferry, which surprisingly happens to be a symbol of local Hong Kong identity? The purpose of this article is to unravel what we can learn from this seemingly new social movement. What is the driving force behind the movement? What are the politics of preservation involved

QoS constrained robust MIMO transceiver design under unknown interference

    Get PDF
We study the robust transceiver optimization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems aiming at minimizing transmit power under probabilistic quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Owing to the unknown distributed interference, the channel estimation error can be arbitrary distributed. Under this situation, the QoS requirements should account for the worst-case channel estimation error distribution. While directly finding the worst-case distribution is challenging, two methods are proposed to solve the robust transceiver design problem. One is based on the Chebyshev inequality, the other is based on a novel duality method. Simulation results show that the QoS requirement is satisfied by both proposed algorithms. Furthermore, among the two proposed methods, the duality method shows a superior performance in transmit power, while the Chebyshev method demonstrates a lower computational complexity. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Modeling pegylated liposomal doxorubicin-induced hand-foot syndrome and intestinal mucositis in zebrafish

[[abstract]]Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) has been widely used to treat cancer. The adverse effects of PLD noted in clinical practice, especially hand-foot syndrome (HFS), are regarded as unique, and the management methods for them remain limited. This study was aimed at developing a feasible experimental model for translational medicine to solve this clinical issue by using skin fluorescent transgenic zebrafish. We established an optimal protocol for the administration of Lipo-Doxℱ, a PLD in current clinical use, to the Tg(k18:dsred) zebrafish line expressing red fluorescence in keratinocytes. We made use of bodyweight, survival rate, gross observation, flssuorescent microscopic assessment, and pathological examination of the zebrafish to assess this model. The consecutive administration protocol of PLD resulted in growth retardation of the zebrafish embryo and survival impairment, indicating establishment of a significant toxicity. We observed fin necrosis and keratinocyte dissociation phenotypes in the PLD-treated fish after consecutive administration. The skin toxicity induced by the Lipo-Dox injection was subsequently reversible, which might be compatible with a clinical course of skin recovery after discontinuation of Lipo-Dox administration. Furthermore, we found that the number of intestinal goblet cells, an important marker of intestinal inflammation, in the Lipo-Dox-injected zebrafish was markedly increased, accompanied by impaired mucosal integrity. The intestinal inflammation induced by Lipo-Dox resembled the intestinal mucositis the clinical patients suffered from after the administration of PLD. In conclusion, we established a zebrafish model for PLD-induced HFS. The intestinal mucositis simultaneously noted in the PLD-treated zebrafish validated the similarity of clinical courses after administration of PLD. This model is easily assessable, efficient, and worthy for use in developing a new therapeutic protocol for prevention or treatment of HFS as well as intestinal mucositis. Further clinical investigations to validate the correlation between human and zebrafish data are warranted.[[journaltype]]ćœ‹ć€–[[ispeerreviewed]]Y[[booktype]]é›»ćç‰ˆ[[countrycodes]]GB

Effect of Al addition on microstructure of AZ91D

Casting is a net shape or near net shape forming process so work-hardening will not be applicable for improving properties of magnesium cast alloys. Grain refinement, solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening and specially designed heat treatment are the techniques used to enhance the properties of these alloys. This research focusses on grain refinement of magnesium alloy AZ91D, which is a widely used commercial cast alloy. Recently, Al-B based master alloys have shown potential in grain refining AZ91D. A comparative study of the grain refinement of AZ91D by addition of 0.02wt%B, 0.04wt%B, 0.1wt%B, 0.5wt%B and 1.0wt%B of A1-5B master alloy and equivalent amount of solute element aluminium is described in this paper. Hardness profile of AZ91D alloyed with boron and aluminium is compared
